Guttridge conveyors play a key part in Malting.

Crisp Malt is one of the longest established malting companies in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. Crisp Malt has installed a new Guttridge conveyor at their most Southerly maltings in the UK, based at Mistley, Essex.

The conveyor is a key part of the processing line from moving the dried & dressed barley to pre-steep bins at a rate of 15mts/hour. It is the only route to the steep from the barley storage silos, so the reliability of the machine is essential for consistent operation and continued production.

The new conveyor will also be used for the recirculation of barley for inspection of raw material quality at a conveying rate of 30mts/hour, so the smooth running of the machine with an aim of ensuring there was no exterior damage to the raw material was an important part of the specification of the new equipment.

Taking into account the workload of the new conveyor, time was taken to consider the low maintenance requirements, as the equipment would be in constant use up to 12hours/day. Time was taken to design the machine to the customer's specification and this was done in conjunction with a constant dialogue with Crisp Malt.

Mistley maltings is located in a semi maritime environment and with the location of conveyor placed at a height, the casing of the chain and flight conveyor had to be specified to cope with the changeable conditions, it was also essential that the casings were built so that no moisture could ingress into the body of the machine.
