This is an exciting opportunity for the UK-based Guttridge to talk more about the manufacturing industry and its importance overall. Guttridge is well known as the leaders in manufacturing bulk material handling equipment for a range of industries and applications such as animal feed, oilseed, malting, grain handling and storage, food, biomass, waste and recycling, and modular mills.

There is almost nothing in your day-to-day life that you eat or use that has not gone through some shape or form of the bulk material handling process, this is one of the most crucial industries that affects our lives, which we may not think about on a day-to-day basis.

But what do you do in Engineering and Manufacturing? Manufacturing engineers are responsible for ensuring that production lines – such as those used when producing vehicles – are safe, effective, and efficient. Typical duties include designing and testing new equipment, processes, procedures, and systems, and installing equipment.

Would we say that Engineering and Manufacturing is a very masculine-oriented industry? Absolutely not! We have a diverse team here at Guttridge and in fact, we sat down with three of our female staff from various departments to understand more about why they chose their careers within the manufacturing industry and how they find their job roles here.

Gemma Darnell is one of our Internal Sales Engineers, who has worked for Guttridge for nearly three years now. When we asked Gemma how she decided to become an Internal Sales Engineer she said that she finds the industry “exciting”, and she especially enjoys “working with the customers and building customer relationships”. Gemma admits that she has “always worked in the construction and manufacturing industry and that joining Guttridge was a step up in my career development”.

“Having a good sense of humour is an important quality to have when you work in the manufacturing industry” says Louise Luck, one of our Design Engineers. On day-to-day Louise designs machine models to suit customer specifications and creates technical drawings for manufacture.

Manufacturing and engineering are broad industries and involve various roles, including Accounting. Emily Giddings, Assistant Accountant for Guttridge says “if you are considering accounting as a career and like problem-solving and dealing with figures than I would highly recommend that you go for it. Some of the qualities that you need are good time management, being organised, good communication skills, and a strong work ethic.”

Choosing your career is probably one of the most important decisions that you have to make in your life. You need to make sure it’s something you are passionate about and right for you.  Working in the manufacturing industry, we can say for sure, it offers you a variety of tasks, you get to meet lots of customers from various industries and can help them to solve their problems by thinking creatively, planning thoroughly, and paying attention to the fine details.
