Seeds that are routinely processed include those with high oil content, such as rape and sunflower, as well as harder materials like soybean and cottonseed. Typically, seeds are free-flowing to the extent that they require careful control, oily, and relatively delicate.

Preventing uncontrolled crushing maximises process productivity and reduces oil release within the conveying equipment, enhancing operational reliability.
Post-processing oil cake is handled either as a waste stream or, more profitably, as a fuel. Like other biomass sources, this material exhibits variability depending on the oil extraction process applied and the extent of microbial degradation. Oilseed conveyors from Guttridge
The free-flowing nature of seeds makes flow rate control an essential aspect of equipment design. Inclines need careful consideration to avoid uncontrolled transport. In addition, belting for both belt conveyors and bucket elevators must be oil resistant to avoid degradation and extend machine life.
Gentle transport with slow running machines is preferred for hulled seeds and/or those prone to break-up during transport.
